10 Year Anniversary CLE Lecture Series
The Future of the Economy and Tax Structure in Nevada

Date:

Dec 5, 2008

Location:

Moot Court/Auditorium

Time: 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.

The lecture will be held in the Thomas & Mack Moot Court Facility at the UNLV Boyd School of Law.

In the current environment of fiscal stress, examining the ways in which Nevada's tax laws are created and administered is particularly timely. Taxpayers, their representatives, and concerned citizens will benefit from this program which will consider these matters through five perspectives. First, the program will survey recent major judicial decisions concerning taxes in Nevada. Second, the program will review Nevada's tax administration structure and its procedures for resolving disputes as to tax liabilities. This will include discussion of the administrative and judicial options available to taxpayers and their representatives in challenging asserted tax liabilities. Third, taxes will be a major focus of the upcoming session of the Nevada Legislature. The program will consider how tax policy is developed in Nevada, how it is made into law, and how legislative advocacy can advance favorable tax proposals and oppose unfavorable proposals. Fourth, ballot initiatives have become increasingly important in taxation in Nevada. The program will review important developments as to making tax law through initiatives, including important recent judicial decisions. Fifth, there are perennial concerns that Nevada's tax structure needs reform. The program will identify and explore important issues as to reform, including promoting revenue stability and balancing economic growth with meeting the expenditure needs of the state.
