Thomas Main

Professor Thomas Main is a leading figure in the field of civil procedure. His books have been published by Aspen, West, and Oxford University Press. One of these books, Civil Procedure: Doctrine, Practice, and Context, is now in its fourth edition, and is one of the most popular casebooks in the field.

Professor Main’s scholarship has also been published in the Washington University Law Review, the University of Washington Law Review, the Notre Dame Law Review, and other respected journals. Most of his scholarship explores dynamics at the intersection of topics in procedure, globalization, and language.

Professor Main is a former Chair of the Civil Procedure Section of the Association of American Law Schools. He is also an elected member of the International Association of Procedural Law and the American Law Institute.

Professor Main is also an enthusiastic and popular teacher. He has been a Visiting Professor at numerous law schools, including Cardozo, UC-Davis, and Florida State. For twelve years he was a Professor at the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law, where he won the Professor of the Year award many times. He teaches Civil Procedure, Federal Courts, Conflict of Laws, Complex Litigation, and Transnational Litigation.

Professor Main clerked for Judge Ruggero J. Aldisert of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Prior to entering academia, Professor Main was an associate in the trial department at Hill & Barlow in Boston, Massachusetts, and thereafter, was the Associate General Counsel of Platinum Equity Holdings in Los Angeles, California.
