National Association Honors Boyd School of Law Chapter of BLSA
Feb 2, 2009

The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) for the Western Region honored the Boyd School of Law Chapter of BLSA at a regional competition held this past weekend. The Boyd student organization was selected for a Chapter of the Year award in recognition of its outstanding community service and academic and professional development endeavors throughout the 2008-2009 academic year. This is the second year in a row that Boyd’s BLSA has been honored by the Western Region in this capacity.

Boyd’s BLSA team finished strong in the regional Thurgood Marshal Mock Trial Competition, advancing to the quarterfinals. The team was comprised of second-year law students Jessica Goodey and Geneva Lemon, third-year law student Amber White-Davidson, and fourth-year law student Emelia Allen. Professors Mary Berkheiser and Robert Correales coached the team and White-Davidson and Allen served as team co-captains.

During the competition, Allen was distinguished among her competitors and named "Best Advocate" for the entire competition. The best advocate award goes to the competitor who received the judge’s best scores during the preliminary rounds of the competition. The competition was held Janurary 28 through February 1 in Portland, Ore.

The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), founded in 1968, is a national organization formed to articulate and promote the needs and goals of black law students and effectuate change in the legal community. As the largest student run organization in the United States with over 6,000 members, NBLSA is also comprised of chapters or affiliates in six different countries including The Bahamas, Nigeria, and South Africa. Organized into six regions (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southern, Mid-West, Rocky Mountain and Western Region), the organization has over 200 chapters and is present in all but a few of the nation's accredited law schools, as well as unaccredited law schools. The headquarters of NBLSA is located in Washington, D.C.
