10 Year Anniversary CLE Lecture Series
How the Bar and Law School Can Work Together to Prepare New Lawyers for Practice in Nevada

Date:

March 27, 2009

Location:

Moot Court/Auditorium

Time:

3:30 p.m.

The lecture will be held in the Thomas & Mack Moot Court Facility at the UNLV Boyd School of Law.

As the legal profession undergoes its most significant contraction since the dot-com boom, examining whether new lawyers are adequately trained to meet the challenges of legal practice is particularly timely. The program is intended to be part of a meaningful dialogue on the appropriate functions of both legal educators and the practicing bar in the training of new lawyers. The discussion will focus on the goals of legal education and legal practices, whether course curriculum ought to be revisited, if not reformed, and how to ensure a more consistent and complete preparation for practice. The program also will assess the impact of mentoring programs and influential publications such as the Carnegie Report and “Best Practices” recommendations of the Clinical Legal Education Association. Finally, the program will consider current and future funding of higher education in Nevada, including the impact proposed budget cuts may have on legal education, the practicing bar and services provided to the public.

Opening Remarks will start at 3:30 p.m.
Moderator: Steve Johnson, E.L. Wiegand Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Research, William S. Boyd School of Law
